Frequently Asked Questions

People are often confused or curious about a lot of the stuff that goes into our GSA. If this includes you, read on! If you have any questions that weren't answered here, go to the contact page and leave a comment anonymously or e-mail one of the people on the page.

What is the point of the Day of Silence?
The DOS brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling/bullying/harassment in schools. Hundreds of thousands of students across the country participate annually. The DOS is in no way a day of "pride" or a "gay day." Supporting the DOS simply implies that you agree that bullying students just because they are different is wrong. It is, first and foremost, an anti-bullying day.

Are all of the members of the GSA gay? How about those who do the DOS?
Absolutely not! Many straight kids join to show their support for the equality of their friends and classmates. Students of all types join in for the Day of Silence each year as well.

What do you actually DO in GSA?
We do a lot of things in GSA. We're a support group, we actively promote and work for acceptance within our school and community, we debate, and we play games and goof off!

What does LGBT stand for?
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.

Will other people find out if I join the GSA? I don't want others to know.
No, if you don't want anyone to find out you join for fear of being judged, others wouldn't find out. Our group is completely confidential. Anything you say here won't be repeated elsewhere.

How many people are in your GSA? How many do the Day of Silence?
Our numbers have grown this year. We have 15+ kids who participate in our GSA. Last year, we had roughly 80 kids staying completely silent for the DOS, with another hundred actively supporting while not staying silent.
