Gender
May 13, 2009When you are born, body parts are distributed upon you. Its in your genes. Whether you will be naturally fat, the size of your nose, the colour of your hair. If you do not like it, what do you do? Exercise, get a nose job, dye your hair. But what if the thing that is making you unhappy is your biological sex? Weren't you "meant to be" male, or female?
Unlike sex, a biological concept, gender is a social construct specifying the socially and culturally implied boundaries and specifications. Simplified? Society. Made. Up. Gender.
"But Lane! I'm a dude and I play football! But Lane! I'm a chick and I'm a cheerleader!" Okay, think about it. What have you heard all of your life? What you've been taught? What has been all around you from a very young age? That you are a boy. That you are a girl. That you are "supposed" to act a certain way to fit in with society. Really - if you hadn't always been taught to act a certain way, and then mold into that - you might not be as "masculine" or "feminine" as you are. I believe that without a certain society's or culture's ideas of gender, most would be more towards the center ... androgynous. I mean, of course there would be some people who were very feminine, and others very masculine, and many steps in between -
because real life isn't black and white categories. With every one, there are a thousand shades of gray. And this absolutely means gender too. Okay, so lets say you're forward-thinking enough to say you agree that gender is nonexistant, but you still think that people shouldn't have a sex change operation. Okay, here's the deal. It shouldn't be necessary, but in today's culture, it sort of would be for trans people. They don't want to be looked at as trans, they want to be looked at as people of their gender. If you don't have a problem with nose jobs and boob jobs, you don't have a problem with sex changes, alright? Alright.
Back to the subject at hand here, why do we even need to separate
people by their sex? Its just one MORE way to divide people into
smaller and smaller subcategories, separating us from one another.
Except its even worse, because instead of separating people based on
personality or clothing style or personal CHOICES, its separating us
with something that is completely beyond our control, like race and
ethnicity. Biological sex simply does not automatically dictate what
your gender is.
